For more than fifty years, Time & Space Limited (TSL) has served as a home for artists, audiences, and ideas that do not fit neatly elsewhere. Through original theatre productions, independent and documentary film, visual art exhibitions, live performance, community events, and Metropolitan Opera Live in HD broadcasts, TSL brings people together to experience art that provokes thought, sparks conversation, and inspires curiosity.

Rooted in the Hudson Valley and connected to a larger world, TSL is both a cultural venue and a gathering place where neighbors come to think, feel, argue, and witness collectively.

Time & Space Limited is a place for truth-telling. We create experimental theatre that encourages audiences to experience time and space differently. We produce art that refuses simplification. We curate avant-garde performance, independent film, visual art, and other forms of artistic expression that challenge convention. We invite our neighbors into a shared civic space to think, feel, argue, and witness collectively. We trust in the intelligence, curiosity, and appetite for complexity that connect our Hudson Valley community to a larger world.

Vision

Time & Space Limited will continue to confront the questions of its time through art. We will champion experimentation over certainty, inquiry over complacency, and imagination over convention. We will challenge new generations of artists and audiences to see differently, think critically, and engage deeply with the world around them. Rooted in the Hudson Valley and connected to a larger world, we will create, teach, gather, and take risks. We will preserve the spirit of our founding not by standing still, but by continuing to evolve. The work is unfinished. The conversation continues.

History

Time & Space Limited was founded in New York City in 1973 by Linda Mussmann, with Claudia Bruce joining as co-director in 1976. In 1991, TSL refused a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts that mandated an anti-obscenity pledge. This, combined with rising costs in NYC, led TSL to relocate to Hudson, NY.

When Linda and Claudia first walked into the former bakery on Columbia Street, they knew they had found a space that could grow with their vision. Over two decades, they transformed the building one space at a time, into an ever-evolving home for the arts, supported by TSL staff, and a host of special friends, members, businesses and foundations who have put their trust and funds behind TSL and what we strive for.

From early days screening 16mm films, where members and visitors sat on wooden pews with cushions from home, to now operating two theaters equipped with state-of-the-art digital projection and Dolby surround sound, TSL has always believed that art brings people together and drives meaningful change. Today, TSL continues to offer programs of creative energy to this community and region, celebrating the art and artists of the past, present, and future.
