In the second entry of Ingmar Bergman’s “Faith Trilogy,” small-town pastor Tomas Ericsson (Gunnar Björnstrand) delivers his Sunday sermon to a nearly empty church, his faith shaken by personal despair and a sense of divine absence. When a desperate parishioner (Max von Sydow) seeks his guidance and Tomas can offer only hollow words, the encounter drives him deeper into spiritual crisis.

Set against the bleak backdrop of a cold Swedish winter, Winter Light unfolds over a few harrowing hours, capturing Bergman’s unsparing examination of faith, doubt, and human loneliness. With stark cinematography by Sven Nykvist and restrained performances, the film reveals the fragile intersection between duty, love, and spiritual emptiness.
