PHILIP GEBHARDT: BEYOND FORM

On view June 28th through July 27th, 2025

BEYOND FORM by Philip Gebhardt

About The Exhibition:
A Three-Year Journey Through Implied Shape and Emotion, Beyond Form marks the culmination of an intensive three-year exploration of abstract art, where the boundaries between human and natural forms dissolve into expressive gestures and subtle, evolving shapes. This exhibition invites viewers to witness the evolution of emotion and perception through a dynamic interplay of implied and abstracted forms—suggesting rather than defining. Over the course of three years, the work has shifted, morphed, and deepened, each piece a manifestation of what lies beneath the surface—traces of the human condition and the natural world, expressed not through overt representation but through suggestion and abstraction. The forms on display are not fixed; they are born of mark-making, impulse, and the continual search for connection and meaning.

Beyond Form reflects the passage of time—where each mark, each curve, and each shift in composition embodies a moment of discovery. These works explore the tension between the seen and the unseen, the finite and the infinite. What emerges from the canvas is not a rigid form but an impression, an essence that speaks to the fluidity and transformation ingrained in both human nature and the world around us. This exhibition captures the unpredictability of life and the ever-shifting terrains that define both physical and emotional landscapes.

2024, Oil on canvas, 77″x128″

Artist Statement: I am drawn to the tension between deconstruction and reconstruction, a dynamic process that mirrors the interplay of natural and human forces in our environment. My work embraces a zealous and gestural style, where spontaneity meets calculated application, and each brushstroke and texture serves as both an expressive mark and a deliberate response, creating a dialogue between figuration and abstraction. My paintings hold a space that blurs the lines between fragment and whole. Works like “The Mending II” and “A Grasp and a Gaze” exemplify my fascination with layered textures and reworked surfaces, while large-scale compositions such as Passage immerse the viewer in a dense and intricate landscape of active brushstrokes and intertwining lines. Through phases of breakdown and buildup, I seek to capture the perpetual evolution of life—its chaos, its rhythm, and its beauty. Inspired by both human emotion and the forces of nature, I aim to create pieces that resonate with the viewer on an instinctual level, inviting them to explore their own narratives within the interplay of texture, color, and form.

Journey to the Other Side of the Valley
2023, Oil on canvas, 84″x55″

About the artist:

Philip is a lifelong New York State resident who discovered his passion for art at a young age. He studied at Fairleigh Dickinson University before earning his BFA from Marist University and later received a Master’s in Art Teaching from the School of Visual Arts. With over 15 years of teaching experience in both New York City and the Hudson Valley, Philip has also been an active presence in the regional art scene. Over the past three years, he has exhibited his work in numerous group shows throughout the area, and in November 2024, he presented his solo exhibition, Between Bodies, at Arbor Gallery in Carmel, NY, exploring themes of gesture, form, and emotional resonance through abstraction. Philip currently works out of his studio in Hudson, NY, where he not only creates but also curates, using the space as a venue for collaborative and group exhibitions that foster community and dialogue among regional artists.
