Time & Space Limited Gallery brings together three artists from the Hudson Valley: Arlene Santana Thornton, Karen Schupack, and Olan Quattro in an exhibition of painting, mixed media fiber art, and collage.
A Stain on our Cities by Karen Schupack is a series of mixed media fiber art pieces that create a visual representation of racist government practices and their impacts on urban development. These practices and policies supported and maintained racial segregation in American cities, often imposing insurmountable obstacles to the ability of many people of color to own property, build generational wealth, and experience the healthy and safe quality of life that so many white urban and suburban residents have been able to enjoy.
Phases by Arlene Santana Thornton is about cycles of the moon, cycles of life, patterns in nature, and the marking of time by the artist with each line or brush stroke.
Daily News by Olan Quattro is an ongoing series in which a collage is made in response to a headline from that day’s’ New York Times. Every day a new headline, every day a new collage. The physical act of collage, of taking scissors to an image, unveils possibilities of editing and reframing of narratives. Quattro engages in this storytelling by documenting and deconstructing the daily political ambushes of our times.

Karen Schupack lives in Albany, NY where she runs the Albany Art Room. Creating art has always been an integral part of Karen’s life. She finds the process fulfilling and strives to use her art to express socially valuable ideas. She spends her working life assisting others to create, and this helps inspire her own artistic expression.

Olan Quattro is a third-generation artist. She grew up surrounded by art in the Central Coast of California and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Both places, which abound in natural beauty, gave her a love of nature that is deeply instilled in her work. Quattro studied art in France and Mexico, learning from art schools and residencies, completing her Masters in Art from Florida State University. Previous to moving to Hudson, NY, she has lived in Santa Fe, NM, Charleston, SC and Miami, FL. Quattro’s daily practice is to create a collage inspired by a headline from The New York Times. Quattro also creates mixed media work combining gouache, acrylic, colored pencil and paper collage to create textures and to tell stories. She is drawn to themes of memory and our place in the environment. Her work is both whimsical and reflective. Quattro has exhibited throughout the United States and her work has found homes all over the world.
