David Deutsch

July 27 - September 1, 2024

Over a career spanning 50 years, Deutsch established himself as a landscape painter, before expanding into other mediums such as photography and sculpture. Deutsch presents paintings of scenes of life in vivid color, highlighting the joy of the everyday.

Still Life with Fruit

For most of his life, David Deutsch has been a professional writer working for the major movie studios in Los Angeles. Deutsch began his journey into art about twenty-five years ago when he lost most of his vision for a period of six months. During that time, the only way he could see color was to shine a bright light on the pages of art books. He absorbed the color palettes of Matisse, Hockney, Juan Gris, Picasso, Fernand Leger, Milton Avery, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Hopper, Richard Diebenkorn, and others. Deutsch fell in love with color and art. When he regained his vision, he began drawing and painting. He took classes at the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA) and studied with noted Northern California collage artist Mitzi Trachtenberg. His pursuit of art transitioned from collage to painting in oils. During the early 2000s he showed my work at the former Nuartz Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Later, when he moved East to New York and South Florida, the style of his art shifted again, to mostly still life and landscape paintings. Deutsch considers himself a colorist. Bright, sometimes saturated, colors are his guiding principle. Like Matisse, Deutsch believes that the purpose of art is to convey beauty and joy and that remains his mission when he creates art. Deutsch wants to make something that brightens the world.
