Square dancing is a form of community dance originating in the American south. Built around units of four couples or “squares” who dance to figures that are taught and called by a “caller,” square dancing is an extremely accessible, beginner friendly, and community oriented form of dance. One of the most distinctive features of square dances is the ‘old-time’ string bands that accompany them with a driving, fiddle centered and heavily syncopated form of music, also originating in the South, that gives square dancing a mystically trance-like and frenetic energy.
