Chance/Change by Mussmann

April 6th, 2023

The “chance operation” commonly attributed to John Cage

and Merce Cunningham as a way to create art in the realm of

performance is part of the “change” in making work. Using “chance”

one leaves the door open to opportunities that can emerge. The ego

is the controlling force far too often when one makes work–sometimes

error is more creative than the dictated plan. When I make work I leave

the options open for change that is discovered by chance. Chance

can be called chaos. Is this why we like to play cards or throw the dice or

play the lottery? or walk the tight rope? or go fishing? or what do you think?
