TSL presents a screening of the 1981 production of Paperplay, an original work by Linda Mussmann with choreography by Claudia Bruce. The work was written by Linda Mussmann in 1981 and are presented here in “performance notes” by Bruce and in “theories” and “drawings” by Mussmann. Paperplay, which deals with subtle musicality and movement, is not meant to mean in any linear sense. Rather, the interplay of movement with words works within a structure conceived by Mussmann and executed by artists not interested in representing or performing but rather in revealing (as a painter or sculptor) the spatial and temporal juxtapositions, in this case, of sound, movement and time. The attempt in Paperplay has been to clearly separate form (movement) from content (words), to show this separation and to elevate both into a “third way” of understanding.
