Spring time here in the northeast where I live and work. The place is
Hudson, New York. Hudson is a small city with a big dream. Named after
Henry Hudson who claims to have discovered the river that others had
already discovered and claimed long ago.
The 315 mile river was named by the indigenous tribes(Mohicans & Lenape)
Muhheakantuck (the river that flows two ways).
History is part of knowing. It is a way of knowing that somethings happened
before you arrived. “Reinventing the wheel” a phrase one hears constantly is a
real notion. Being informed is key to change.
“Now times” seem lack luster. We seem to be trapped in the “making things
great again”syndrome. The “inevitable” has created a malaise and just increases the
speed of hopeless consequences. We now exist with a class of people that
do not know history…. rejects facts….sucks energy from the trough of gossip.
If we do not help build a generation that
can make their own history we are doomed to be owned by those who believe in
the cycle of repetition. Kids are targets in schools because those in charge
refuse to value their lives over the rights to own a gun (2nd amendment). (for ex,).
To make change one must be the change….fight off the ones who want things to
go back… to retreat to the old ways —where racism, homophobia, xenophobia,
mysogyny and patriarchy rule. “The future is in the instant” as Shakespeare
writes in the play Macbeth. Time is wasted on those who look back–we need
forward stepping to begin “not again” but anew.
