Chaos 101 by Linda Mussmann Feb. 17, 2017

Warburg Library was the genius of Aby Warburg—heir of Warburg wealth who died 1929. Aby arranged books not by alphabet catalogue instead….it is catalogued according to themes…” the methodology of serendipity is what its all about, and the methodology of serendipity is responsible for great ideas.”
Ah! for the love of serendipity—it is the pleasure of chaos that allows things to come together at moments when things seem to be coming apart at the seams. We stitch the cloth together to come up with the whole idea but it is the pieces and the bits that lay about that make the picture complete. Hat’s off to the Warburg clan and to the love of the storage of books sorted by themes—and not the dreaded alphabet.
My library is organized that way—the alphabet never has served me well—ever since the 5th grade I gave it up as another kind of dictatorship—it was imprinted on my young mind that the dictionary was a kind of ruler that organized things for some and not for others. We some of us like to bend the rules and in bending the rules we find another way to enter the world of states and situations—some fit us and some don’t. We some of us are odd ducks who organize the day by themes rather than by the appointments of the day——somehow what ever the plan is/was there is a better one that more often than not walks in the door and sits at my lap and begs for my attention—and like a sweet slice of pie — I take the bait.
